In the book [[Farmer Giles of Ham]], Farmer Giles, a simple man with an inflated reputation for killing giants, is called on once more by the people of Ham to do battle with the dragon Chrysophylax, who threatens to set Ham aflame. With the help of his faithful dog, Garm, and his mare, Farmer Giles tricks the dragon into going back to his home. Farmer Giles is then crowned king of Ham and sets up his court, Worminghall.

[[Leaf by Niggle]] is Tolkien's semiautobiographical work about Niggle, a painter who never manages to finish his masterpiece while alive, and is ridiculed by the town because of it.

[[The Adventures of Tom Bombadil]] is a collection of sixteen poems by Tolkien (some attributed to [[Bilbo Baggins]] and [[Sam Gamgee]]) that range in topics from [[Gondor]] to [[hobbits]]. Some of the poems included in this book are mentioned, and even sung, in [[The Lord of the Rings]].

The fat and unheroic Farmer Giles of Ham is called upon to do battle with the dragon Chrysophylax; Niggle the painter sets out to paint the perfect tree in Leaf by Niggle; hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls partake in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil; and Smith of Wootton Major journeys to the Land of Faery via the magical ingredients of a giant cake.
