So, to merge or not to merge? that is the question. This also goes for Minas Ithil into Minas Morgul. Since i put the merge notice up on this i think you all know where my preferences lie, but i just want to get the discussion rolling so it's in people's conciousness. I think we should keep the two articles. Describe the period before the "fall" on Minas Anor, and a summary of that on Minas Tirith. Same for Ithil/Morgul and Khazad-dûm/Moria. -- Ederchil 15:35, 24 April 2008 (EDT)

Translation

Why is Minas Anor translated as "Tower of the Setting Sun" in Fellowship when we know that "Minas" means tower and "Anor" simply refers to Arda's sun without any indication of its state? Hadn't Tolkien decided on the translation of Anor yet? --Ben Kerman 23:47, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Rising Moon and Setting Sun aren't given as literal translations but as poetic epithets to the cities. Minas Anor literally means "Tower of the Sun". Whether it refers to the setting sun perhaps is just meant or understood from other factors. I haven't read any explanations, but I believe it refers to the locations of the cities as seen from each other or Osgiliath: as Minas Ithil was on the east, those from Osgiliath/Anor saw the moon rising from its direction; Minas Anor was on the west, so those from Osgiliath/Ithil associated it with the setting of whatever body it was named after.
