'''Taur-e-Ndaedelos''' was the great forest of central  [[Rhovanion]] that had traditionally been known as [[Mirkwood|Greenwood the Great]] for much of [[Middle-earth]]'s history. After about a thousand years of the [[Third Age]], a shadow began to fall on the wood with the emergence of the [[Necromancer]] at [[Dol Guldur]], and its name changed, to '[[Mirkwood]]'. Two [[Elvish]] forms of this new name are recorded: [[Taur-nu-Fuin (Mirkwood)|Taur-nu-Fuin]] is almost a literal translation of 'Mirkwood', but a further name, apparently more common, was Taur-e-Ndaedelos, the ''Forest of the Great Fear''.

Taur-e-Ndaedelos was another name of Mirkwood, after the Necromancer emerged at Dol Guldur.

Etymology

The name is Sindarin and means "forest of the great fear".[1] taur means "forest"[2] whereas daedelos "shadow of fear".[3]

In another point, the latter form was given as Daedhelos (with lenited -delos) and glossed as "Shadow of Abomination".[4]

In The Book of Lost Tales, the Gnomish names Ladwen-na-Dhaideloth, Ladwen Daideloth and Dor-na-Dhaideloth appear, referring to a land of Tol Eressea known as Heath of the Sky-roof. It was the site of a great battle, and afterwards was known as Withered Heath.[5]
