The Ambarkanta is the fifth chapter of The Shaping of Middle-earth. The chapter includes the text "Ambarkanta: The Shape of the World" (attributed to Rúmil) and the associated Ambarkanta maps.

Developed during the 1930s, according the Christopher Tolkien, the Ambarkanta represents the "next phase" of the cosmology after the earlier world decribed in the Book of Lost Tales.[1]
