Tolkien Reading Day is an event held on the 25th of March every year to celebrate and promote the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.[1]

History

The idea for a Tolkien Reading Day came from an enquiry in 2002 from a journalist who asked 'is there any day devoted informally to readings from the trilogy, in the way that “bloomsday” is devoted to Joyce?' The Tolkien Society committee liked the idea and eventually agreed to hold the event on 25 March every year. This date was chosen based on a number of considerations, but the main reason is that 25 March was the day that the One Ring was destroyed and Sauron defeated. The first Tolkien Reading Day was held in 2003.[1]
