It is not known the reason for the nickname. But, ''T. Northcote Toller'' was an author of ''''An Anglo-Saxon Dictionary'''' considered the definitive lexicon for Old English, that [[Tolkien]]  often used in their studies. 'Toller' is also the name of a medium-sized dog.
