Tribute Space

First off, I’d like to pay tribute to my usernamesake (add that to the list of words I’ve made up), Meriadoc Brandybuck, known to the men of Rohan as Holdwine of the Mark. He was, in my personal opinion, a very brave and noble Hobbit, good friends with his younger cousin Peregrin Took, and just my favorite character in general. I am very proud to be paying tribute to him, both here and in real life (because apparently I look like him and I have a good friend who is Pippin to my Merry). Now excuse me while I throw this knife at the big freaky Ringwraith bearing down on me for writing this.

About Me

Hello there! I'm Holdwine Meriadoc and I am an avid tolkienist from the U.S.A. I first started reading The Hobbit when I was nine, and two years later, after I told my dad that I had just finished listening to the audiobook for the fifth time, he decided to let me move on to The Lord of the Rings. I read the entire trilogy in about three months with breaks between books while Dad had me read other books for school. If I had read them all in a steady stream I would have finished in a week. Since then, I have been collecting a steady stream of Tolkien's works and companion books, and have taken the example of the late, great Sir Christopher Lee and committed to reading the entire trilogy at least once every year since I first read it.

My favorite character in all the legendarium is, as you can tell from my name, Meriadoc Brandybuck, not only because the book version of himself and myself are very similar but because I don't want him to be too "overlooked," in his words.

I am a fan of the LotR movie trilogy, but I do not at all think they surpass or have the same quality as the real thing. The Hobbit trilogy is decent in my mind, but much less so.

I am an amateur (and slightly immature) digital artist and an intermediate sketcher (is that a word?), and I have some of my digital images uploaded to TG.

I usually just fix grammar problems and add source citations, with the occasional major expansion/rewrite/reverting of spam and other issues.

And yes, I am one of those weirdos who has extensive debates about such issues as Celegorm's hair color, whether Elves have pointy ears, and whether Amrod burned or not. And, as a Generation Z hardcore Tolkien fan, I also have a steadily growing collection of tasteful Silmarillion memes no one else would get.

Random Other Facts

  • I do think that Balrogs have wings, but that they are nonfunctional or Durin's Bane had muscular dystrophy from being cooped up in a cave for ages.
  • I believe that Huorns are mostly Ents that have become tree-ish.
  • I'm American but I use Commonwealth spellings.
  • How does a giant spider throw a ball? Shelobs it. (That's my dad's joke, not mine)
  • I speak a few useful phrases of Sindarin.
  • I am a nondenominational Protestant Christian who takes the time to research other branches of Christianity before forming opinions on them. If anyone would like to ask/debate/talk to me about my beliefs, feel free to send me a message on my talk page.

Headcanons

  • Amrod died in the burning of the ships at Alqualondë.
  • Celegorm the Fair had either silver or strawberry-silver hair, as I cannot seem to find any ancestors of either of his parents with blond hair (assuming the Tolkien-affirmed fact that humans and elves are biologically identical and therefore that their genes would work in the same way).
  • "Primitive" Qenya is actually the equivalent of Ecclesiastical Latin; it came after Quenya, changing through the Middle Ages, and was widely used until people decided to start learning the original again.
  • Saruman and Sauron were close friends when both served as Maiar of Aulë. This is one of the reasons Saruman turned to evil.
  • When the Ambarussar were born, Fëanor named Amrod "Little Finwë" fully expecting he would be his last child, then Amras was born, he panicked, and named him "Last Finwë." Nerdanel was not pleased with him about this, so she named them both "Ambarussa" to spite him, then renamed Amrod "Doomed" when he protested for the same reason. After this, people often forgot which twin was born first, which is why Amrod got nicknamed "Second-russa" even though he was the elder, and the name unfortunately stuck.
  • Elves have pointed ears.

Favorite Quotes

"'Well, here is the strangest riddle that we have yet found!' exclaimed Legolas. 'A bound prisoner escapes both from the Orcs and from the surrounding horsemen. He then stops, while still in the open, and cuts his bonds with an orc-knife. But how and why? For if his legs were tied, how did he walk? And if his arms were tied, how did he use the knife? And if neither were tied, why did he cut the cords at all? Being pleased with his skill, he then sat down and quietly ate some waybread! That is at least enough to show he was a hobbit, without the mallorn-leaf. After that, I suppose, he turned his arms into wings and flew away singing into the trees.'" -- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers

"Yes, I am afraid trolls do behave like that, even those with only one head each." -- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

"'I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me!'" -- Gandalf, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

"Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?" -- Gandalf, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

"Roads go on forever, but I can't without a rest. It's high time for lunch." -- Peregrin Took, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

"Great heart will not be denied." -- Théoden, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King

"It is best to love first what you are fitted to love, I suppose: you must start somewhere and have some roots. . .." -- Meriadoc Brandybuck, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
