Ned Smithson was the son of Smith Smithson, the title character of the story Smith of Wootton Major, and Nell Smithson. His sister was Nan. When he became an adult he followed in his father's profession as the village smith. When Smith had given up his Fay-star Ned kindly told his father that he had much to do with him in the Old Smithy House[1],and much else to teach him.[2]
