On the translation of poetry (sometimes known as Essay on Translation of poetry) is an unpublished essay by J.R.R. Tolkien concerning his thoughts on the translation of poetry. Written in 1963 after reading Poems from the Old English (1960) translated by Burton Raffel.

Extracts have been published in Tolkien Estate website and in The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide p. 770 (2006).
