Talk:Battle of Osgiliath (disambiguation)

This work is very poorly written gramatically, shall I rewrite it? Unsigned comment by 217.136.1.218 (talk • contribs).

Go for it :) But spelling grammatically wrong may not be the best start :p --Hyarion 20:58, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Two Battles of Osgiliath

I was looking at the War of the Ring article and found the "Battle of Osgiliath" in the list of battles for the war. Looking here I found this article which carries the Cleanup box on it. The title suggests one battle. There were two distinct battles in the story, one on 20 June 3018 and another on 12 March 3019. The article also notes that skirmishing had gone on for over a century, but for Osgiliath itself there was a considerable lull between the two fights. The article makes it sound like there was continuous fighting in the city from TA 3018 through TA 3019. The first battle secured the east side of the city for Sauron, but the hidden purpose was to bring out the Nazgûl so that their hunt for the Ring would be concealed. The second battle was part of the push towards the Pelennor Fields, so the reasons for the two battles were quite separate. I believe it would be good to split these two battles into two articles, perhaps named "First Battle of Osgiliath" and "Second Battle of Osgiliath". Both would carry the Unnamed box since the title "Battle of Osgiliath" never appeared in Tolkien's works (to my knowledge). Do others think such a split would be a good idea? If yes, would the procedure be to create two new articles and then delete this one? I don't know how to rename an existing article, if it can be done.

Just a quick answer concerning renaming of articles: yes, renaming articles can be done, just press the "Move" button next to the "History"- and "Edit"-buttons above the article window. This way, the article history will be preserved.--Morgan 06:04, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
I agree with moving, but aren't there three battles. Since there was a battle between Eldacar and Castamir during the kinslaying. --Amroth 15:58, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm not keen on moving this, or at least, not to the suggested locations. We have named at least three "battles" at Osgiliath, and I'm sure we can think of more; this makes a mockery of calling them first/second/third etc. I propose, that "Battle of Osgiliath" becomes a disambiguation page and we name the articles based on their proven descriptions (seeing as I can't find the name "Battle of Osgiliath" anywhere).
So, "Battle of Osgiliath (disambiguation)":
  1. "Siege of Osgiliath" (in App A) or "Burning of Osgiliath" (in App B), 1437;
  2. "Sauron's attack on Osgiliath" (what it's called in RC), June 20, 3018;
  3. "Faramir's defence of Osgiliath" (how it's described), March 12, 3019.
And we put {{unnamed}} at the top of them all. What do you think? I'm open to suggestion no the specific names. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 16:23, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
It's a very neat solution indeed, I'm in favour.--Morgan 16:27, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Just finded out (Osgiliath) that there was another battle during the 25th age. Should we name it "Sauron's first attack on Osgiliath"? Or is there a better name mentioned (or sugested) in LOTR? --Amroth 17:23, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
I think a fifth battle was even mentioned somewhere in the last chapter of the Silmarillion, "Abouth the Rings of Power and the Third Age" (not sure how it's named in English, since I only have a Dutch version). Tough I'm not sure. --Amroth 17:31, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
I agree with Mith's disambiguation solution. I have done some research and can expand his list as follows:
"Battle of Osgiliath (disambiguation)":
  1. "Anárion’s defense of Osgiliath" (how it's described in S) S.A. 3429 - 3434
  2. "Siege of Osgiliath" (in App A), T.A. 1437 (the burning of Osgiliath, as in App B, came at the end of the siege);
  3. "Uruk-hai attack on Osgiliath" (in App A, The Stewards, first appearance of uruks), T.A. 2475
  4. "Sauron's attack on Osgiliath" (what it's called in RC), June 20, 3018;
  5. "Faramir's defence of Osgiliath" (how it's described), March 12, 3019.
I'm writing the articles for all 5 conflicts - let me know if these names are acceptable. When I add them I will make "Battle of Osgiliath" the disambiguation page and edit "Osgiliath" and the wotr-template as necessary (and all this was to correct one part of the "War of the Ring" article). -- Gamling 01:59, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Maybe some other battles have the same problem (Minas Morgul, Isengard). --Amroth 17:37, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
