Adelard Took was a Hobbit of the Shire.

History

Adelard was the son of Flambard Took, and had several children; Reginard, Everard and two daughters. They were all present at Bilbo's Farewell Party in S.R. 1401.[1] The next morning, he joined a crowd who went to Bag End to ask Frodo Baggins about Bilbo's disapparance. Bilbo had left for him an umbrella as a parting gift, although Adelard left taking some others.[2]

Etymology

Adelard (lit. noble-hard) comes from a Teutonic word meaning "resolute" or "courageous".

Other versions of the legendarium

In older editions of The Lord of the Rings, the Took family tree in Appendix C showed that Adelard had three daughters. The number was changed to two in later editions.

Portrayal in adaptations

2007: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Adelard Took is a librarian in Tuckborough.
