Primitive Elvish (perhaps Common Telerin) was b'randâ, apparently representing an even more primitive adjective *barándâ (stem BARÁD).

Though a better translation of the name would be "Marchbuck," Tolkien translated it "Brandybuck" in order to retain the connection with the Brandywine River.
