"Cross-bows" is a concept which has only appeared in an adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Crossbows are a type of bow weapons where the bow and its string are mounted on a stock. The bowstring along with bolt is pulled back and then held in place until fired by a trigger lever.

They are commonly shown in adaptations, but aren't mentioned in the original works.

Portrayal in adaptations

2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers:

In the movie The Two Towers, the Uruk-hai use crossbows at Helm's Deep. Uruk-hai can use these kinds of crossbows with deadly accuracy and with ease but it takes some time to reload. However in The Battle for Helms Deep you only see Uruk crossbowmen in the beginning of the battle and then you don't see them for some reason.

2006: The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II:

Uruk crossbowman are portrayed as a deadly fighting unit.

2007: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Crossbows are available to player characters as handheld ranged weapons. They are less common than bows. Some player character classes, such as the Champion, are not allowed to use the weapon. [1]
