It was later discovered that the Dunlendings had secretly been moving back into the northwestern uplands of Rohan throughout the reigns of Déor's predecessors. By Déor's own time, a powerful Dunlendish force had been established, and the King was forced to ride northward from Edoras, ultimately to defeat his enemies. The victory was a bitter one, though, for he discovered that the Dunlendings had also captured the [[Ring of Isengard]], which Déor had no possible means of recapturing. So Déor's reign saw the beginning of a danger from the north that would reach a crisis nearly fifty years later, when the Dunlendings were to come close to destroying Rohan alogether.
Déor's reign lasted nineteen years. He was succeeded as King by his son, [[Gram]].

Déor (Third Age 2644 – 2718, aged 74 years) was the seventh King of Rohan.

History

Déor was born during the rule of his great-great-grandfather, Aldor the Old. He himself became king at age 55, following the death of his father. During Déor's kingship the peace of Rohan (which had begun during Aldor's reign) came to an end - the Dunlendings took to raiding the herds and studs of the Rohirrim over the River Isen.[1]

When it became clear that the raiders were coming from near Isengard, in T.A. 2710 King Déor led an expedition to the north. He found and defeated a host of Dunlendings, but discovered that Isengard was held by hostile forces. Secure in the fortress they could not be dislodged and Egalmoth could not send help. Instead Déor kept a strong force of riders in the north of the Westfold.[2]

Déor's reign lasted nineteen years. He was succeeded as King by his son, Gram.

Etymology

Déor is an Old English word for "wild animal" ("deer") and also means "brave, bold".
