Túrin wearing a dwarf-mask, art by Ted Nasmith
"For the Naugrim withstood fire more hardily than either Elves or Men, and it was their custom moreover to wear great masks in battle hideous to look upon."
Quenta Silmarillion, "Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad"

The dwarf-masks were helmets of great crafting made in the First Age by the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains.

The Dwarves of Belegost appeared in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears wearing such masks.[1] A dwarf-mask, as well as dwarf-mail, was in the possession of the Elves of Nargothrond; Túrin Mormegil found in the armouries of Nargothrond an all-gilded mask which he wore before going to battle.[2] At the Battle of Tumhalad the mask protected him from Glaurung.[3]
