Humphrey William Bouverie Carpenter (April 29, 1946 – January 4, 2005) wrote the Authorised Biography of J.R.R. Tolkien published by Allen and Unwin in 1977, and helped edit The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, published in 1981. He died at the young age of 58 from heart failure.
