On 11 November 1956, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to a Mr Britten.[1][2]

  • Contents: Among topics included, the letter discusses Gimli and Legolas, and on "the top of one page Tolkien mentions the nomenclature regarding names for places in the Shire" apparently "crediting Christopher for one or more of them, explaining that it was Christopher who drew the map". Further, at "the bottom of the same page, JRR expresses his delight at a question regarding the verse Oliphaunt, saying that almost none of the reviewers had mentioned his poetry; except Auden".[1][2]
