Of the Sindar is the tenth chapter of the Quenta Silmarillion section within The Silmarillion.
Synopsis
The focus shifts to the Elves of Beleriand and jumps back in time to during Morgoth's imprisonment. These are called the Sindar, elves who did not go to Valinor but did set out on the Great Journey. These elves have been able to live in peace with the absence of [[Morgoth]. Under the lordship of Thingol and Melian, the elves of Beleriand grow in wisdom and skill. They soon make contact with the Dwarves, or Naugrim as the elves call them, of Nogrod and Belegost. The Dwarves soon learn the Sindarin language and begin trading with the Sindar, though they are not friends so much as allies and trading partners.
Melian warns Thingol that the peace will not last forever, and he asks the Dwarves to make him a secure dwelling place. The Dwarves gladly do this in return for the knowledge of Melian and pearls Thingol obtains from Cirdan. The dwarves soon construct a vast mansion of caves, which is named Menegroth, the Thousand Caves. Menegroth soon becomes one of the most beautiful palaces ever created outside of Aman with both the Elves and Dwarves contributing to the work in a cooperative display seldom seen in the days ahead. For a time, peace still reigns in Beleriand.
Soon however, dark rumors begin to spread. The Dwarves inform Thingol that not all of Morgoth's servants were destroyed by the Valar. The Avari are being driven away by evil creatures coming down from the North where Morgoth once reigned. These evil creatures begin to appear in Beleriand, including wolves and foul Orcs. Thingol comissions the dwarves to begin making weapons and armour and stores them in his armouries.
There was another elf named Denethor who led his people into Belereiand. These would be known as the Green Elves. Thingol welcomes them and they dwell in Ossiriand.i
Unfortunately, the time comes when Morgoth returns to Middle-earth, ending the peace at at last. Morgoth rebuilds Angband and unleashes his armies upon Beleriand. He directly attacks Doriath. Thingol calls upon Denethor for assistance, and they attack the Orcs. The armies of the Orcs are routed, but not before they kill Denethor and scatter the green elves. Many green elves to live in Thingol's domain.
Melian uses her power to create the Girdle of Melian, a protective veil that keeps out not only Morgoth's forces, but anyone who Thingol or Melian do not want entering Doriath. There is peace within the veil of Doriath, but outside is choas, for Morgoth's forces have overrun Beleriand.
Soon, out of the west, come the white ships bearing Fëanor and the Noldor...
