No Men west of Bree (?)[edit source]

This article has: "...it is clearly recorded that no permanent settlements of Men existed anywhere west of Bree by the late Third Age", a statement which yells for a reference!

A wikipedia article, which seems to be a rehash (or is it the other way around) of our text, gives the reference Return of the King for this statement. Could the following passage be the relevant one:

"'You will be let alone, Barliman,' said Gandalf. 'There is room enough for realms between Isen and Greyflood, or along the shore lands south of the Brandywine, without any one living within many days' ride of Bree. And many folk used to dwell away north, a hundred miles or more from here, at the far end of the Greenway: on the North Downs or by Lake Evendim." (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King, "Homeward Bound")

Here is a passage that may account for the statement in the article: "In those days no other Men had settled dwellings so far west, or within a hundred leagues of the Shire."[1] Since settled dwellings are mentioned it would support the idea of nomads in the woods.

It doesn't really support it, it leaves open space for the assumption. -- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 19:41, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Canon status[edit source]

Concepts only mentioned in Unfinished Tales (like Eryn Vorn) - are these to be considered non-canon (or having a "lower" place in a canon grade)? --Morgan 15:28, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Well Eryn Vorn is included in the maps in TLOTR. I think it only matters if there's a conflict (e.g. Celeborn and Galadriel), otherwise I'm willing to take stuff as canon (otherwise why have published it - why not put it in THOME instead?). I'm not onboard with the idea of this canon scale (or putting it on articles) but that's a separate issue.--Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 16:13, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
