Telumehtar (T.A. 1632[1] - 1850[2], aged 218 years) was the twenty-eighth King of Gondor. He succeeded his father Tarondor in T.A. 1798.[3]
History
In the early years of Telumehtar's reign over Gondor, the Corsairs of Umbar raided the coasts of Gondor as far as the Anfalas.
Recalling the death of Minardil and rankled by the insolence of the Corsairs, Telumehtar resolved to put an end to these attacks and gathered his forces. In T.A. 1810 he took Umbar by storm and drove out the Corsairs[4]. In that war the last descendants of Castamir were killed.
Telumehtar added the epithet Umbardacil to his name to commemorate his victory. Umbar was held by Gondor throughout Telumehtar's reign.[5]
Etymology
Telumehtar is the Quenya name for the constellation Orion, meaning ("Warrior of the Sky").[6] Paul Strack explains that the initial element is telumë ("roof, canopy; heaven, sky") and that the second element might be mehtar or ohtar ("warrior").[7]
His epithet Umbardacil means "Conqueror of Umbar",[8] being a compound of Umbar + -ndacil ("victor, slayer").[9]
