The Golden Perch was an inn in the township of Stock, north of Bucklebury near the eastern borders of the Shire. It was said by Pippin to serve the best beer in the Eastfarthing.[1] It was probably favoured by anglers hence the name.[2] When Frodo, Sam and Pippin left Hobbiton to go to Crickhollow, Pippin didn't want to take the shortcut Frodo had decided they would take, saying that 'Shortcuts make long delays'. Instead, he insisted on passing from the Golden Perch. But Frodo told him how 'Shortcuts make long delays, but inns make longer ones.'[3]
Etymology
The name refers to the fish perch (and not a land-measure or bird-perch).[2]
