My Apologies

Hi Grace18, I'm just here to say sorry about my accidental edit of Huan. I was fixing some grammatical errors when the entire page just blanked...I'm not even sure what happened. Thank you for fixing it. - Ancalagon the Black 19:31, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

No worries! It was just a mistake, and an easy fix for me to undo. I'm still figuring out the system myself, so I completely understand. I don't know what caused the page to blank, but if you hit preview before you finalize it, it will show you what the edited page will look like, and if it does something weird, I would just hit cancel unless you can figure out what the problem is. --Grace18 19:50, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will make sure to do that every time I'm editing from now on. Thank you! - Ancalagon the Black 20:11, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

About your questions

  • If you are not sure if a template should be removed, ask it in the talkpage, but if you think you have done a good work and everything is according to the MoS, just do it: if others disagree they will notice. We need to clean up a little, those ugly templates are applied everywhere.
  • We should define better how to standardise History sections. Definitely, The Children of Húrin is better matter to be used in the History sections, as it is more detailed, while the edition of The Silmarillion can be discussed in OVOTL.
  • Like any article, if the info is not much, it's not worth to create a History section, but if we include one, the intro is supposed to be a little summary.

Thank you so much! I sometimes feel bad bothering other users with questions, I really appreciate you taking the time to look at those. That clears some things up for me. Thank you!

You can also write that kind of questions in the own talk page of the page you have doubts of. Feel free to ask me anything. Btw, thank you very much for revising the Christianity article. --LorenzoCB 22:46, 23 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

About your first question

Hello Grace18, I am also an American high school student. As to the questions about the 50th-anniversary editions, there are indeed both a 3-volume and a 1-volume version, but that's the only part of that question I can answer. I own the 3-volume 50th-anniversary edition, and my dad owns a one-volume edition, but I don't know what version it is because he won't let me touch it, haha. So all that to say I'm afraid I can't help you with the page number part of your question, but feel free to bug me with any other questions you want. I don't mind a bit. --Holdwine Meriadoc (Talk/Contribs/Edits), 04:13, 25 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you for the information! I have an old, crumbling paperback one-volume set that is technically my parents, but I have permanently "borrowed" (it lives in my room now, and no one else uses it). It's certainly not the 50th-anniversary edition; it seems to be some other random version that I can't figure out. I've been looking into getting the 50th-anniversary edition, but had no clue what to look for. Any advice helps, much appreciated! --Grace18 05:21, 25 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

OK, thanks for the resource! --Erónèhire 17:21, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

One-Handed

We might not need this page, all I did was "Adopt" it. It was an Orphaned Page. It would be fine to delete it, but I would think we should enhance the details of Beren's reason for his name. Unsigned comment by Erónèhire (talk • contribs).

I was just wondering about it, because recently we have been working to redirect articles with "Other names" of the characters to the character's page and making sure the information is included there. But I wasn't sure whether One-handed counted as another name. We need the information, I'm just not sure where. Thanks for your work on the wiki! --Grace18 13:52, 12 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Checking The Silmarillion and The HoMe Index, the correct epithet is "One-hand", while "One-handed" is the translation of Erchamion. The redirect can be done already, we only need to include the title to the "Other names" section in Beren's article. --LorenzoCB 15:04, 12 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mabel Tolkien & One-volume set

Thank you for your help on the page for Mabel Tolkien. When I saw how short her page was, I was very disappointed, since she deserves far more. This is Tolkien Gateway after all and she was his mother. I was wondering if you knew how to add an image to it. Also, concerning your question about the single-volume edition of The Lord of the Rings, I think it has the same page numbers as most three-volume editions nowadays, which would be a continuous line of page numbers from beginning to end, but not all. However, most pages here seem to be sourced by chapter rather than page. (I am also a high school student, by the way) SingingOrc 20:49, 11 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you for your work here (and welcome to TolkienGateway!) I'm always happy to help with new pages. LorenzoCB has already taken care of the images I think, so we owe him a big thank you there. I'm not great with adding images, but Help:Images should have the necessary advice should you need it for the future. Thanks for your explanation about the pages! Here sources from LoTR are supposed to have page numbers from the 50th edition, but as most of our regular editors don't have the 50th, it makes it a bit tricky, and we mostly stick to chapters. It's good to have you here, feel free to ask questions if things get confusing! --Grace18 04:35, 12 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for your response. To the best of my knowledge, as long as your copy of The Two Towers and The Return of the King do not start over page numbers at one, it should be the same—if the chapter number starts at the first page of the PrologueSingingOrc 11:44, 12 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Second Fall of Minas Ithil and edits on pages related to Mordor or Ithilien

I appreciate that you are one of the active users and that you have contributed to improve the wiki and corrected typographical errors (including some of mine). I also appreciate that you focussed on typographical errors and grammar errors as a new user and that you took your time to watch edits made by others users. I made quite a lot of changes to the new Second Fall of Minas Ithil that you created. The content of the Second Fall of Minas Ithil is quite complicated, because it comes from many different sources (some of it from Appendix A, some of it from Appendix B of LOTR, some of it from Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age from UT, some of it from The Forbidden Pool from LOTR and some of it from a draft of the chapter The Tower of Kirith Ungol from Sauron Defeated). I first only wanted to read the sources that you specified as references, to ensure the quality and because I did not remember if Minas Ithil was emptied during the Great Plague and which source mentioned that the Nazgûl came by night and if they came over the passes (plural) of the Mountains of Shadow. I then decided that it was necessary to add some more references and to rearrange those references to make clear which reference supports which part of which sentence if information in a sentence is coming from several sources. I hope that my heavy editing will not discourage you from making bigger edits in the future. If you have a printed copy of the 50th anniversary edition of The Lord of the Rings, feel free to add the page numbers in references in connection with The Lord of the Rings. I only have access to an e-book of the 50th anniversary editions of The Lord of the Rings which has its own different page numbers. --Akhorahil 12:26, 19 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you for your additions to that article (and your encouraging note)! I unfortunately still do not own Unfinished Tales, although I hope to remedy that soon, and I seem to have overlooked some of the mentions in LOTR. Thanks for catching those! Since I only noticed the mentions in Appendix B and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age in the Silmarillion, I found myself blending the dates from B and the details from the Silmarillion into one paragraph. It was short, so I awkwardly tagged both references on the end. I'm glad you found more references and organized them better! Sadly, I also don't have the 50th anniversary edition, so I can't add to the page numbers. --Grace18 16:31, 19 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You are welcome! Since we only know that they laid siege to Minas Ithil in the year 2000 of the Third Age and that they captured Minas Ithil in the year 2002 of the Third Age the length of the siege depends on assumptions about the day and month of the beginning and the end of the siege and on rounding. For example if the siege started on April 1, 2000 and ended on September 15, 2002 then it lasted for over 2.5 years and thus rounded up for three years. Since we do not know, maybe it is better not to mention a length in years and to only mention the year of the beginning and the year of the end. --Akhorahil 19:45, 19 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
