Talk:House of Isildur

While browsing Foster's Guide, I discovered that there is no entry on either "House of Isildur" or "House of Anarion". This means that in LotR there is no reference to these two Houses as such; instead there are entries like "Line of Isildur" and "Line of Anarion", two terms well attested in LotR. I dont know about the terms of nobility and what each implies in practice, but it seems that these two noble Lines were not titled Houses, perhaps to keep Elendil in a traditionally higher status.

The question is, is the title "House of Isildur" mentioned in any apocryphal text by Tolkien (viz. HoMe, perhaps PM), or is it simply a conventional name used by the first editor of this article? If the phrase "House of Isildur" is never mentioned by Tolkien, then this should be renamed "Line of Isildur". Sage 10:57, 13 November 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The House of Isildur is once mentioned in The Lord of the Rings, note 23 referring to Arvedui's words to the chief of the Lossoth whom he gave the ring of Barahir when sailing to his destruction: "In this way the ring of the House of Isildur was saved...". --Tik 09:29, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
It's also mentioned in The Silmarillion Index as well.
A slight word of warning that although The Complete Guide to Middle-earth is very good, it is neither complete nor perfectly accurate. As a wiki, we don't need to base what we do from what Foster has done. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:51, 1 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Of course it's not impeccable; as you have noticed I have begun comparing the Guide against what we have done in this wiki. The comparison has been enlightening. Other than the fact that the Guide is outdated, this comparison helped me spot outright mistakes or ommissions in the Guide. Beyond that, any diferences, or different interpretations, are worth further critical investigation both ways. Sage 16:31, 1 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Descent of Dirhael[edit source]

I don't know exactly how to go about fixing this (it's a bit beyond my editing pay-grade), but Dirhael was a descendant of Aranarth, not Arathorn I, according to the "Tale of Aragorn and Arwen," in Appendix A. The line connecting Dirhael to Aragorn I should be moved to Aranarth, first Chieftain of the Dunedain, and note 3 in the Chieftains Notes should be changed to reflect this. EDIT: I managed to fix the Note, but I have no idea what I'm doing with Family Trees./EDIT Corsair Caruso 17:53, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've fixed this. Incidentally, the family tree did originally show this, but it looks as if a random editor changed it and no one noticed. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 06:12, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
