Tolkien's Favorite Artist[edit source]

Thanks so much for your help on the Poems and Songs of Middle Earth article! I apologize but I've temporarily undid your edit as there was no reference for the statement. I think you're probably right, but when we add a statement like that we need to make sure we also include a reference to where Tolkien stated or implied that Pauline Baynes was his favorite. If you can find the source, I can help you with how to add it into the article. We appreciate your help! Hyarion (talk) 13:52, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My apologies. I know I've read of his admiration for her work, but I don't have a direct source. I've done a bit of searching around the site here for help. Letter 235 and "Letter to Pauline Baynes" both demonstrate that he sought and appreciated her art for his written works. Also, for what it's worth, the page on The Chronicles of Narnia calls Baynes "Tolkien's favourite artist" with no reference.
Anyway, I thought a quick addition to Pauline Baynes would be nice for this particular page. Could I rephrase my addition to say something more like "an artist Tolkien appreciated and frequently used" with a reference to Letter 235 and/or the "Letter to Pauline Baynes"? No worries at all, I'll try to do some digging too. In the mean time I agree, your rephrasing with the reference to Letter 235 sounds great. You can simply append <ref>{{L|235}}</ref> to the phrase to add the reference. The The Chronicles of Narnia statement without a source doesn't surprise me, we still have a lot of work to do. If you want to tackle it while we're thinking about it, it may not hurt to tweak that article's phrasing as well or at least add the {{fact}} template after the statement, this reminds us that we need to find a source for it. It's definitely a pain citing everything but that's our goal, that way all the visitors can look up our sources and verify everything without needing to blindly trust us. Keep up the great work!
