Thanks for the welcome[edit source]

Hi, Mith. I just threw in a lot of stuff (mostly in the refs) about "Bullroarer" in Bandobras Took#Etymology, with sources going about 3 levels deep. Dammit, this site is feeding my addictions! --Thnidu 10:34, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Thnidu, you're very welcome and we're glad to have you one board! My colleague, Ederchil, has undone your edit as you've reference Wikipedia; on Tolkien Gateway we don't reference Wikipedia but feel free to use the exact same sources that they use! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 13:16, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm new[edit source]

Hey mith I'm trying to get more involved on here can you help me guide me some I'm new to this and feel slightly overwhelmed thanks Throrin Longbeard 03:26, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Neumanjames2010, I'm pleased that you are so keen to get more involved. What exactly would you like help with? --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 11:17, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
just unsure where i can help more and to get more involved with the community Throrin Longbeard 10:24, 21 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hey mith I dont know how to make or use info boxes other than user boxes I was thinking we could add the instruments to the 13 dwarves in thorin co. Throrin Longbeard 12:12, 21 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I can't really direct you about where you can help - everyone just helps out, independently, wherever they feel most able. Do you have any particular Tolkienian interests?
Your idea about the instruments is a good one, but it does only apply to Thorin and Company and we do try to keep the infoboxes uniform (the infoboxes don't currently support instruments). I shall have a think! If you want to add an infobox to a page, there is a fairly self-explanatory code on each page - the list of infoboxes is available here: Category:Infobox templates. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 14:56, 21 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sourcing[edit source]

Hey mith if I were to clean up the mirkwood and thorin pages are there certain edtions that we tend to use as sourses or can we just use any edition of the original stories Throrin Longbeard 22:26, 21 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

With The Hobbit there is no preferred edition. With The Lord of the Rings we tend to prefer the 50th Anniversary Edition as this is fairly universal with consistent pagination. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 22:39, 21 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Different ISBNs[edit source]

Would it be much trouble to add extra lines for different ISBNs in (the expanded version of) Template:Book? I stumbled upon the need to add an "Ebook ISBN" in addition to the "Print ISBN" when creating the page for Tolkien in the New Century.--Morgan 16:47, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Done. I've even done a cool thing whereby if you do put in two ISBNs it changes on the template to read "ISBNs" instead of "ISBN". --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 11:17, 6 July 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Minor Hobbits in AUJ EE[edit source]

Tosser Grubb needs a citation, then, by that logic, do all the other Hobbits who appear in the market scene in the extended cut of "An Unexpected Journey" need one as well (the ones actually given character names, at least - Old Gammidge, Old Hob and Fredegar Chubb)? Unsigned comment by BalrogTrainer (talk • contribs).

Yes, I totally agree. I only commented on the one because, at the time, it was the only article I was aware of.
On the subject of Old Gammidge, have you seen Talk:Old Gammidge? --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:35, 18 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I didn't realize that character existed when I made the page for the film character... though whether they're intended to be one and the same, it's hard to tell, IMO. Still, I'd have no problem if you (or another mod) merged the two pages.--BalrogTrainer 17:12, 18 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, like you I do think it needs to be established that they are the same. I'm not sure how this can be confirmed or not! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:25, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The law of Númenor[edit source]

One did not simply change the line of succession to the throne of Númenor. But why not at that time? I think, that's very relevant to TG and to everybody! Greetings, --TarElessar 17:26, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I can only suggest that you research the topic and update the article with your findings. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 18:07, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay. I'm trying that already. --TarElessar 10:15, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you![edit source]

Thanks for fixing those references for me. I was just trying to tailor up a few articles I saw in need of sourcing/"higher quality standards" according to their messages. Is there a tutorial on here on how to properly make references? I'm familiar with Wikia referencing, but not quite sure how to do it in this layout. Bloody Mary 16:54, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You're very welcome. I'm not sure how Wikia do things but I thought they were broadly similar. See Help:References for help on this, which also includes a lot of our citation templates which are incredibly handy! If you have any questions, just ask. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 21:26, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am sure (hey, Wikia Star here): we use the same sourcing system as Wikia: <ref name=X></ref>. The rest is a bit trickier: we have several quick fix templates for different books and we use {{References}} to create a references/notes section rather than have <references/> at the bottom of the page. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 21:45, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hey thanks for the welcome[edit source]

Hello mith and thanks for the welcome! I am a real Tolkien enthusiast and would love to take on any tasks you would like to entrust me with. I have one question: is there a restriction on movie related images? I'd be willing to help put some of the New Line cinema film portraits of the characters into info boxes if you would like (I would source obviously). I just think the audiences have seen the movies so it helps them identify characters tremendously if they recognize them from the films! Unsigned comment by Serpent Lord of Harad (talk • contribs).

You're very welcome, Serpent Lord of Harad, I'm glad to have you on board! With regard to images of characters we always include images from the films in the "Portrayal in adaptations" section but prefer non-film-derived artwork for the infobox images. I hope this helps! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 10:35, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok thank you! I have another question: should the pages for the Haradrim and the Easterling have info Boxes? Unsigned comment by Serpent Lord of Harad (talk • contribs).
Yes - we have an infobox template for that: Template:Race. By the way, please sign your comments on talk pages by writing "~~~~" at the end of your messages. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 12:55, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok sorry. One thing: is there away to upload new versions of files as there is one wikipedia? I only want to offer clearer images from the movies of the Haradrim and Easterlings. --User:Serpent Lord of Harad/sig 12:55, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes, via Special:Upload, but as you are still very new you need to make a few more edits before you have permission to upload images. In general we try to deliberately be a bit different from Wikipedia as we're better than them!
To set up your own signature please follow the tutorial at Help:Signatures; or else just use "~~~~". --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 14:11, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
