Echthelion by Daniel Govar

Ecthelion was an Elf of Gondolin, leader of the People of the Fountain. He was also at one point a guard of the last Gate of Gondolin, and had a helmet with a silver spike. He had the most beautiful voice and greatest musical talent of all the people of Gondolin. Along with Glorfindel and Egalmoth, he was appointed as Aredhel's escort on her ill-fated journey. He led a wing of Gondolin's forces at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

During the Fall of Gondolin, he and Tuor had made their way into the Square of the King. Previously, Ecthelion had slain three Balrogs, but he had lost the use of his shield arm in the process. Then Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, came. He and Ecthelion duelled, but eventually Ecthelion lost his sword, unable to protect himself. Just as Gothmog was about to deliver the finishing blow, Ecthelion jumped and drove his helmet into Gothmog's body, and wrapped his legs around the demon. This caused Gothmog to lose his balance, and he, along with Ecthelion, fell into the Fountain of the King. Gothmog's fire was thus quenched, but Ecthelion also drowned with him.

Some have speculated that Orcrist mentioned in The Hobbit was Ecthelion's sword.

It is said that his voice is a warcry of the Eldar, and terrorizes the orcs. Ecthelion's name has the connotations of "spear", or "sharp-point", but does not directly translate into anything.

There were two Stewards of Gondor named after Ecthelion.
