Stock was a town in the north of the Marish, lying on the Stock-brook stream near to the banks of the River Brandywine and south of the Brandywine Bridge in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. The Causeway traversed Stock, and above the town it branched to a road[note 1] that led to Tuckborough to the west.[1]:p. 88[2] The Golden Perch in Stock was said to have the finest beer in the Eastfarthing. The Puddifoots of Stock were house-dwellers, as most folk of the Marish.[1]:p. 92
During Frodo's journey to Buckland, Frodo announced that he wished to straight across country to the Bucklebury Ferry. Pippin objected to the short cut, and mentioned the Golden Perch. One more reason to avoid Stock was in order to keep Pippin away from there and prevent their journey from being delayed.[1]:p. 88
Etymology
The name possibly represents a modernization of Old English Stoc "place, outlying farm or hamlet".[3]
Portrayal in adaptations
2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (video game):
