Delving was a town in the Shire that appeared in Perry-the-Winkle, a nursery rhyme[1] by Samwise Gamgee[2].[3]

It was perhaps a fictionalization of Michel Delving.[4]

Etymology

The name represents a possible Old Hobbitish form Delfing. It means "digging".[5]
