Eärendur (pron. [ˌe.aˈrendur]) was the fifteenth Lord of Andúnië in Númenor[1] in the days of king Ar-Sakalthôr.[2] Eärendur was the brother of Lindórië, who would be the grandmother of the wise King Tar-Palantir.[1][2]

As Lord of Andúnië, Eärendur was also the ancestor of the Kings of Gondor and Arnor in Middle-earth. Aragorn II was his direct descendant through no less than forty-four generations.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Eärendur is a Quenya name. It means "(professional) mariner".[3] As Paul Strack explains, a more literal translation might be "Servant of the Sea". It is a compound of eär ("sea") and -(n)dur ("servant").[4]
