Fourth Age 64
[edit] Spring
- Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took depart the Shire and travel into the south (S.R. 1484).[1]
- Faramir Took I succeeds his father Peregrin Took as Thain of the Shire (S.R. 1484).[1]
[edit] Autumn
- Death of King Éomer (S.R. 1484).[1]
- Elfwine, son of Éomer, becomes the nineteenth King of Rohan (S.R. 1484).[1]
- Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took then travel on to Gondor (S.R. 1484).[1] Peregrin brings a copy of the Thain's Book with him.[2]
Note
For many events in the Fourth Age only the year is known and that year is recorded according to the Shire Calendar, in which the first day of the year was 2 Yule.[3] In the reckoning Gondor, Fourth Age years began on the first day of the month of Víressë, which corresponded to 25 March in the Shire Calendar.[4] Thus any event with only a Shire Reckoning year recorded may have occurred in the first 86 days of the year (2 Yule through 24 March) and thus belonged to the year before (by Gondorian reckoning). Those events with only a Shire Reckoning year known have the S.R. year shown in parentheses. The reference regarding Peregrin's bringing a copy of the Thain's Book to Gondor confirms that these events occurred in Fourth Age 64.
