Snakes were reptilian creatures, often associated with the forces of darkness, and especially with Morgoth, the first Dark Lord.

In Quenya, "snake" is ango or lókë. Sindarin has lhûg.

In Gnomish, lingos means "snake" and ling means "small snake".^[1]
