Tolkien Gateway talk:Map

From Tolkien Gateway

Okay, in the edit summary I asked whether we know any streets, well, I did a quick search. Just go to GoogleMaps, and type in "Frodo". Now we can all live in Erebor! -- Ederchil 13:46, 23 April 2008 (EDT)

Yea now I'm starting to think every business/street/etc with a Tolkien-related name may be too much, it might lessen the importance of the interesting locations such as where Tolkien lived, etc. Though I'm not sure where to draw the line. I do want to eventually add buttons for showing/disabling types of landmarks, so that way if people do want to see just places where Tolkien has been, then that's possible. --Hyarion 15:43, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
I think we should at least have all the places that we have articles on. But at what level? Should we do "Oxford" or "Magdalen College, Ox", "Exeter College, Ox" and "Eagle and Child", so people can zoom in on Oxford? Also, do we do "Bournemouth" or "Miramar Hotel, Bournemouth"? "Birmingham" or "King Edward's School, Birmingham"? Or all? Are there statues of Tolkien anywhere? -- Ederchil 16:34, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
The goal is to be as specific as we can, I'd even like to pinpoint where the Tolkien Society planted the two trees, and the famous tree seen in the photograph of Tolkien, etc. A marker for "Oxford" city won't be necessary since we have numerous markers already within Oxford. There's the Treebeard statue supposed to go up as well as a bronze bust of Tolkien which I'll be adding locations of. Maybe in the future we can design possible tour routes for fans. --Hyarion 17:54, 24 April 2008 (EDT)
