The Chequers Club was a dining club founded by J.R.R. Tolkien and Colin Cullis – many of the members had previously been members of the Apolausticks, another club founded by Tolkien. [1]

Tolkien provided the menu artwork (see Ye Chequers Clubbe Binge) for a club dinner, held on June 18, 1914.[2]
