Orgulas Brandybuck was a Hobbit of Buckland.

History

Orgulas was the youngest son of Marmadoc Brandybuck and Adaldrida Bolger. He had one son, Gorbulas.[1]

Etymology

The meaning of the name Orgulas is unknown. J.R.R. Tolkien noted that the names of the Bucklanders had a vaguely Celtic style.[2]

Jim Allan noted that the adjective orgulous ("proud", "haughty"), an anglisized form of a French word corresponding to orgeilleux in Modern French, is used by Malory in Le Morte Darthur. There it is used as a title of a Knight of the Round Table named Bellyance le Orgulus.[3]
