Third Age 2980 (abbreviated to T.A. 2980) is the 2980th year of the Sun of the Third Age of Middle-earth. Third Age 2980 was also known as S.R. 1380 in Shire-reckoning.

- 6 - Birth of Samwise Gamgee, fifth child and third son of Hamfast Gamgee and Bell Goodchild.[1]
During 2980[edit | edit source]
- Thorongil (Aragorn) with the leave of Ecthelion II, attacks Umbar, destroys the fleet and kills the Captain of the Haven.[2][3]
- Thorongil leaves his companions at Pelargir and goes on alone for other tasks. His adventures end.[2][3]
- Aragorn enters Lothlórien and there meets again Arwen Undómiel. Aragorn gives her the ring of Barahir, and they plight their troth upon the hill of Cerin Amroth.[2]
- About this time Gollum reaches the confines of Mordor and becomes acquainted with Shelob.[2]
- Birth of Everard Took, fourth child and second son of Adelard Took.[4]
- Birth of Berilac Brandybuck, son of Merimac Brandybuck.[5]
- Birth of Fredegar Bolger, first child and son of Odovacar Bolger and Rosamunda Took.[4]
- Birth of Tolman Cotton Junior, first child and son of Tolman Cotton Senior and Lily Brown.[1]
- Death of King Thengel.[6]
- Théoden, son of Thengel, becomes the seventeenth King of Rohan.[6]
- Death of Thain Fortinbras Took II.[4]
- Ferumbras Took III, son of Fortinbras, becomes the thirtieth Thain of the Shire.[4]
- Death of Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck; they are drowned in the Brandywine. Their son, young Frodo Baggins, is adopted by his uncle Rorimac Brandybuck.[7][5][8]
